Alfred Nobel
Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden Alfred Nobel was a chemist, engineer, entrepreneur and businessman. He invented dynamite and was also a philanthropist. He did not win any awards himself but gave a legacy on his death to create the Nobel prizes, which are recognised as the highest award anyone can receive. He left 9 million dollars on his death in 1896 for a foundation to award annual prizes for achievement in five fields – literature, physics, chemistry, physiology and medicine and peace. A sixth award for economics was created in 1969. When his will was opened it came as a surprise that his fortune was to be used for prizes. The executors of his will were two young engineers, Ragnar Sohlman and Rudolf Lilljequist. They set about forming the Nobel Foundation as an organisation to take care of the financial assets left by Nobel for this purpose. These were several problems to overcome as the will was contested by relatives and questioned by authorities in various countries. Some interesting facts related to Alfred Nobel are: On his death he held around 350 patents. The element nobelium was named after him. He wrote one play during his lifetime that was called Nemesis. The publication of a premature obituary condemning his invention of dynamite was said to have made Alfred decide to leave his wealth as a legacy for outstanding achievements. His will that also created the Nobel Prizes consisted of a single page of text. As well as being the highest award available a winner of a Nobel Prize can expect to pocket around one million dollars.
