Andy Warhol
He was born on August 6th, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, his birth name was actually Andrew Warhola, being the son of Julia and Andrej Warhola who were immigrants to America from Czechoslovakia now the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He was educated at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh and graduated in 1949 with a major in pictorial design. His huge and colourful silk-screen paintings of objects like Coke bottles and a Campbell's Soup cans established him as the leader of the Pop Art movement. His brightly coloured portrait of Marilyn Monroe is a well known image from the 1960's. He famously said "In the future everyone will be world-famous for fifteen minutes." Andy made films such as "Chelsea Girls" which had a strong documentary feel and collaborated with the pop group The Velvet Underground. Andy died on February 22nd, 1987 following complications from routine gallbladder surgery. Some interesting facts
Throughout the 1950's he had a successful career as a commercial artist.
He was shot in June 1968 by Valarie Solanis, the founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men).
He created a TV show for MTV in 1986 called “Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes”.
In 1994 the Andy Warhol Museum opened in Pennsylvania. To some he was a genius, to others merely a brilliant con man. NOW TAKE THE QUIZ
