Mother Teresa
The woman known as Mother Teresa was born on August 27th, 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia her full name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Her parents were Nikola and Dronda who were both ethnic Albanians. Nikola was a partner in a successful construction business and died when Mother Teresa was eight. Dronda owned an embroidery and cloth business which she set up following her husband's death. At age 18 she received several months training at the Sisters of Loreto an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. Between 1931 and 1948 she taught as a Nun in a convent school in Calcutta. Then later started a new sisterhood and spent most of her life helping the sick and poor. On September 5th, 1997 she died from heart failure. On her death her Missionaries of Charity were working in 123 countries. Her work was recognised through several awards and prizes, the most prestigious were: Medal of Freedom from the United States (1985). Nobel Peace Prize for her decades of service to the sick and destitute (1979). Pope John XXII Peace Prize (1971). Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). Some interesting facts At the age of 12 she felt the call of God Her nicknames were "Mother Teresa of Calcutta" and "The Saint of the Gutters". She founded the Missionaries of Charity that was devoted to helping the sick and poor. She could speak 5 languages. In 1998 a young Indian woman claimed that her large stomach tumour vanished after praying to Mother Teresa. This miracle was recognised by the Vatican and paved the way for the beatification of Mother Teresa in 1998. She is not far away Sainthood, since then various committees and tribunals have been checking her life to see whether she meets the standards of 'heroic Christian virtue' necessary for her to be declared a saint.
